William Bolcom's Aubade for the Continuation of Life, for oboe or soprano saxophone and piano, was inspired by a reading of Jonathan Schell's The Fate of the Earth. It is a quiet, elegiac piece written for Heinz Holliger, a Swiss oboist, composer and conductor, and Dennis Russell Davies, an American conductor and pianist. The inspiration for this piece came from a conversation between Bolcom and Davis regarding the fragile state of affairs during the Cold War and the prospect of a nuclear conflict. This inspiration remains a concern today as we consider global warming and other threats to our planet.
