Chopin wrote his set of 24 Preludes, Op. 28 between 1835 and 1838 while staying in Mallorca with George Sand. The Preludes were inspired by J.S. Bach’s Well Tempered Clavier which Chopin was studying at the time; and although following a different key ordering from the original, they too are written in all twenty four major and minor keys. Chopin’s preludes were innovative in that they stood on their own as self-sufficient works (a ‘Prelude’ being a work which was usually to be followed by another piece). As a master of the miniature, Chopin was able to create some of the most poetic music and express the widest range of emotions through these short pieces. Ruti Abramovitch
