Inspired by the paintings of the Spanish artist Francesco Goya, Granados wrote his piano suite Goyescas in 1911. The fifth piece in the set: El Amor y la Muerte– Balada (Love and Death) is one of the most profound and elaborate pieces of the suite. It is a work of intense drama which tells a tragic story of love. This piece alludes to themes from all the previous pieces in the set and is highly improvisatory in nature, showing Granados’ pianistic style at his best. Ruti Abramovitch
