Musician's or Publisher's Notes

In this recital program, we see how early 20th Century Russian composers influenced the music of American composers of the mid-late 20th Century.

Mad Rush                Phillip Glass

Danse Russe from Petrushka                  Igor Stravinsky

Stravinsky's Russian Dance (1921) is a rhythmic tour-de-force whose incessant, driving rhythms can be seen as a precursor to the Minimalist style of the1980's, represented here by Glass's Mad Rush (1979).      Gideon Rubin

When I first heard this song it was something I could imagine hearing like in the background but then it just changed and it expresses  so much beauty.

he gets better with listening and with time. However some of his stuff I still don't really appreciate (or understand), the best bits I could simply immerse myself in forever and put my life on hold to do so.

I heard this once, over 35 years ago. Began a lifelong interest in Glass, but I could never find this piece again. Thank you so much for reintroducing me to it. I find the playing a bit propagandist, as if trying too hard to make a point about the expressive possibilities of the "minimalist" style. But I don't intend to lose this work again!
