"I don't have
a plan when I choose what music to learn and play," Stephen Hough says, "I tend
to go by instinct. I like to find things that are surprising, but I also like
to come to the standard repertoire and find a new freshness in the music." New
freshness is what can be expected in the familiar tune My Favorite Things from the well-known musical Sound of Music. After winning first prize in the Naumburg
International Piano Competition in New York in 1983, Hough came to
international attention appearing in recitals regularly in major halls and
series all over the world. As a composer, he is known best as an arranger and a
writer of works in smaller forms. This transcription delivers what Hough
intended: "a smile of recognition and a quizzical wrinkle of perplexity."
