Schumann's Arabesque Op. 18 is a short, poetic piece in rondo form. The main material returns several times with contrasting sections in between. Interestingly, the name "Arabesque" is derived from the Western image of Arabic art and music, which was thought to be very ornate and elaborate. In actuality, Arabesques are not typically very similar to Arab music although the genre became standard and was used by many composers, including Debussy, Sibelius and Tchaikovsky.Igor Lovchinsky
