Pablo de Sarasate (1844 - 1908) was born in Pamplona, Spain, the son of an artillery bandmaster. He made his Paris debut as a concert violinist in 1860, and played in London the following year.
In his early career, Sarasate performed many opera fantasies, most notably this Carmen Fantasy of his own composition on themes from Bizet's opera. Sarasate was admired for the Spanish flavor in his compositions, which is reflected in works his fellow composers dedicated to Sarasate-such as Édouard Lalo's Symphonie Espagnole and Camille Saint-Saëns' Introduction and Rondo Capriccioso.
