In this work, the composer describes the mass
emigration of the early 20th century from the view of the individual leaving
his homeland for the U.S. Here, the
dispersed reunite in the security of their cultural sameness, but also learn to
adapt to the culture of their new home. In each of the three movements
(arranged for today's artists from a 6-movement suite for orchestra), we hear an
authentic folk melody, which gradually takes on Western harmonies and rhythms,
and even slides into and out of the idiom of early jazz. Olli-Pekka Tuomisalo
