Composer Sergei Prokofiev was also a renowned pianist and conductor. Among his compositions are multiple operas (The Love for Three Oranges), ballets (Romeo and Juliet, Cinderella), symphonies, concertos and sonatas, that are frequently performed in concert halls throughout the world. Prokofiev's Violin Sonata No. 2 in D major, Op. 94a was originally composed as a Flute Sonata. Following the advice of the great Russian violinist David Oistrakh, the composer arranged it for violin and piano. The four-movement piece has lyrical elements typical of the flute. Specifics of violin technique have allowed some textural changes (e.g. added double stops). The first movement has two rather lyrical themes and an energetic middle section that starts with a fanfare-like rhythm. Interestingly, the playful second movement, originally marked Allegretto Scherzando for flute, turns into Presto in the violin rendition, making it more theatrical. The sublime third movement is followed by a virtuosic, dancelike finale, humorous with instrumental "tricks".It reminds us that Prokofiev was a ballet composer. Kinga Augustyn
