Pablo de Sarasate was a Spanish violinist and composer who lived during the latter half of the nineteenth century, best known for his idiomatic works for violin. Sarasate’s inimitable artistry and command as a performer led English playwright and intellectual George Bernard Shaw to remark that the Spaniard "left criticism gasping miles behind him.” His Zigeunerweisen, or “Gypsy Airs”, composed in 1878, is a staple of the violin repertoire. A showpiece drawing on the popular Csárdás folk dance, the work is a tour de force in violin virtuosity.Notes by Benjamin Laude
