In the aftermath of World War II, Witold Lutosławski emerged as a leader of the vibrant Polish avant-garde. Like Stravinsky, whose aesthetic he admired, Lutosławski held the postwar serialist composers at arm's length, gravitating instead toward the colorful sonorities and tonally untethered harmonies associated with Debussy and his followers. Subito, commissioned as a test piece for a 1994 international violin competition in Indianapolis, was Lutosławski's last completed composition. It followed hard on the heels of his Fourth Symphony and shares some of that work's rhythmic ingenuity and dour lyricism. Soran Sophia Lee
