Born in the same year as Johann Sebastian Bach and George Frederick Handel, Domenico Scarlatti received his early training in Italy from his famous father, Alessandro Scarlatti, and later worked in Portugal and Spain. Few of his compositions were published during his lifetime, most appearing in print over the centuries after his death. Domenico Scarlatti wrote 555 keyboard sonatas, which were envisioned as pairs with corresponding major and minor tonalities, although the pairs may contrast in tempi or complexity. All of his keyboard sonatas are single movements and most are in binary form. Notes by Belle Chen
