In a clear little brook, There darts in happy rushing The moody trout Like an arrow. I stand on the bank And watch in sweet repose The cheery little fish’s bath In the clear little brook.
A fisherman with his rod Came and stood on the shore, And watched with cold blood How the little fish weaved about. So long as the water stays clear, So thought I, there is no worry, He would not catch the trout With his rod and line.
But finally to the thief The waiting became too long. He made the little brook treacherously murky, And just as I thought it So twitched his rod The little fish wriggled on it, And I with agitated blood Saw the deceived one.

Die Forelle
In a clear little brook,
There darts in happy rushing
The moody trout
Like an arrow.
I stand on the bank
And watch in sweet repose
The cheery little fish’s bath
In the clear little brook.
A fisherman with his rod
Came and stood on the shore,
And watched with cold blood
How the little fish weaved about.
So long as the water stays clear,
So thought I, there is no worry,
He would not catch the trout
With his rod and line.
But finally to the thief
The waiting became too long.
He made the little brook treacherously murky,
And just as I thought it
So twitched his rod
The little fish wriggled on it,
And I with agitated blood
Saw the deceived one.
