Through field and wood I roam, My little song pipes the way, So I go from place to place! And to my pulse And to my tempo All moves with me.
I can hardly wait in expectation of them, The first flowers in the garden, The first blossom on the branch. My songs greet them, And comes winter again, I sing again that dream.
I sing them far and wide Across the icy breadths, There winter blossoms beautifully! Also these blossoms fade, And new joy finds itself On the built-up heights.
Then when I, by the Linden, The young folks find, So happily I excite them. The dull lad puffs himself up, The stiff girl spins herself To my melody.
It gives wings to the feet And drives through valley and hill The loved one far from home. Loved, dear muses, When will I on her breast Finally again find rest?

Der Musensohn
Through field and wood I roam,
My little song pipes the way,
So I go from place to place!
And to my pulse
And to my tempo
All moves with me.
I can hardly wait in expectation of them,
The first flowers in the garden,
The first blossom on the branch.
My songs greet them,
And comes winter again,
I sing again that dream.
I sing them far and wide
Across the icy breadths,
There winter blossoms beautifully!
Also these blossoms fade,
And new joy finds itself
On the built-up heights.
Then when I, by the Linden,
The young folks find,
So happily I excite them.
The dull lad puffs himself up,
The stiff girl spins herself
To my melody.
It gives wings to the feet
And drives through valley and hill
The loved one far from home.
Loved, dear muses,
When will I on her breast
Finally again find rest?
