Isaac Manuel Francisco Albéniz y Pascual was a Spanish virtuoso pianist, composer, and conductor. He is one of the foremost composers of the Post-Romantic era. He is best known for his virtuosic piano works based on Spanish folk music idioms. Albéniz left two works unfinished at his death, with Navarra as one of them. This was first completed by Albéniz’s pupil Déodat de Séverac. Navarra imitates the texture of Spanish guitar music combined with explosive and pianistically challenging climaxes. It remains among the most attractive and popular of descriptive Spanish piano compositions. Dr. Tokarski will perform Arthur Rubinstein’s version of Navarra which he recreated from Rubinstein’s recordings. This version has never been published.
