Erich Wolfgang Korngold was born in Brunn, Moravia (modern Czech Republic) on May 29, 1897.A child prodigy, he studied at the Vienna Conservatory before embarking on a remarkable career as a classical and film composer during Hollywood’s Golden Age.Korngold composed incidental music for Much Ado About Nothing in 1918 for a Viennese production of this Shakespeare play, and later condensed the original chamber orchestra score to a work for violin and piano. The two movements featured in today’s performance reflect the charm and humor which explain the suite’s enduring popularity.Holzapfel und Schlehwein (Marsch der Wache), which translates to “Crabapple and Plum Wine (March of the Watch)”, depicts characters Dogberry and Verges, a humorously offbeat duo on a mission to thwart the schemes of the play’s troublemakers.Mummenschanz, which means “Masquerade,” provides a backdrop for one of the final scenes in the play. It depicts a festive party in which the characters set aside differences in favor of love.Tami Lee Hughes
