Hughes composed S.L.I.C.E., “Soulful Latin In a Classical Environment”, as a commissioned work for Tami Lee Hughes’ debut solo recording, Legacy: Violin Music of African-American Composers (Albany Records, 2011).S.L.I.C.E. is an upbeat work, combining Afro-Cuban traditions, jazz harmonies, and contrapuntal passagework. The jazz influence is particularly prevalent in the middle section, which explores tonal regions separated by a half step (à la Miles Davis, “So What”).A blend of vernacular emblems and European compositional technique, S.L.I.C.E. generates a fresh and stimulating ride.
