El
Albaicín (from Suite Iberia Bk III) Isaac Albéniz
The
suite Iberia, written between December 1905 and January 1909, represents
the fulfillment of an aim that had inspired the career of Isaac Albéniz: a desire to create, in his own words, "Spanish
music with a universal accent". The twelve pieces, spread between four books,
represent a grand tour of Spain.
"El
Albaicín" is the name of a gypsy quarter in Granada, and the piece unfolds
in a lively angular dance rhythm with a melancholy sweetness and bold
harmonies. Pia Bose
