Poulenc's Sonata for Clarinet and Piano was composed in 1962 and premiered in 1963 by Benny Goodman and Leonard Bernstein. Poulenc originally intended to perform the premier of this work himself, but died shortly before, thus making this piece one of his final works. He dedicated the clarinet sonata to Arthur Honegger, another member of "Les Six".
The work is distinctively French in form and melody. The themes range from delightfully mischievous in the opening of the Allegro Tristamente to hauntingly beautiful in the Romanza. The Allegro con Fuoco concludes the piece with hurried intensity and exuberance.Sergey Gutorov
