French composer Francis Poulenc is best known for his important contributions to the mélodie (French art song) and for his choral music. Only a few of his piano pieces are frequently performed, and this piece is one of his beautiful illustrative piano compositions. Each Novelette has a distinctive character and different dedicatee. The first Novelette, in C major, is dedicated to an elderly lady who was a friend of the Poulenc family. The second, in B flat, is dedicated to the music critic Louis Laloy, and the third, in E minor, is dedicated to R. Douglas Gibson, the composer’s dear friend. Poulenc was fond of a blurry piano sound, which can be produced by plenty of pedaling. He liked the melody line singing above the multi-layered sonority. Klara Min
