Vincent Persichetti was an American composer and pianist who was also an important musical educator. He integrated different musical ideas into his compositions and shared these ideas with his students at Juilliard, which included composers Philip Glass and Peter Schikele (P.D.Q. Bach). Along with his musical studies, Persichetti also attended art school and was an avid sculptor throughout his life. A pastorale is a piece of music, literature or art that depicts idealized life in the country, often featuring shepherds. This work is more tonal than many of his other music for winds, and integrates folk songs and dances. The opening flute melody draws the listener into a bucolic scene, and the rhythms throughout suggest country dances.
