Karl Pilss was a Viennese composer and pianist who was greatly influenced by 19th century romantic music, particularly that of Richard Strauss. His compositions include 85 works for wind instruments, ten orchestral works, 19 Lieder and 34 choral works. He taught piano and theory at the Vienna Academy of Music and worked as a director for a number of choirs in Vienna, including the Vienna State Opera. The influence of vocal music is apparent in the lovely melodies that unfurl gently over a quiet accompaniment or sweep grandly through the instrumental voices. This four-movement work was written in 1967 and is like a small symphony for quintet. There are many layers to each movement, with melodies and countermelodies interwoven for a rich and beautiful texture. Sapphire Quintet
