Adrien Barthe, a French composer, began his music studies with piano and composition lessons and eventually became a student at the Paris Conservatory. The term passacaglia derives from the Spanish pasar (to walk) and calle (street). This piece is reminiscent of the original passacaglias, which were 17th century Spanish instrumental interludes between accompanied dances or songs. They were often written in triple meter and the ostinato, or repeated motif, can be heard throughout.
