Edward Marcus is a composer, clarinetist and conductor whose music has been performed and recorded by groups all over North America. Most recently, his Winter's End for Cello and Small Orchestra was premiered in Victoria, BC and the Seattle Symphony performed his Chanukah Klezmer Medley. He graduated from the New England Conservatory and was a classmate of quintet member Lisa Taylor. They share a similar cultural background, for which food, music and dance are enduring and essential elements of an often dispersed society. This piece is a medley of Klezmer tunes that was composed especially for Sapphire Winds. The title, Freilich, refers to a type of lively dance tune with an asymmetrical underlying rhythm. The melodies chosen for this work have mostly Bulgarian, Roumanian and Bessarabian roots. Sapphire Quintet
