It
is impossible to date Robert Schumann's Variations on a Nocturne by Chopin,
since neither of the two manuscripts of this work is dated. However, Chopin's
Nocturne in G minor, op. 15 no. 3 was first published in 1834, and some
documents and letters suggest that Schumann wrote his variations between Fall
1835 and Spring 1836.
Only
fragments of the Chopin Variations have been found. The editor of the critical
edition of the piece, Gerd Neuhaus, corrected some errors published in an
earlier edition, and composed a carefully thought-out ending to round off the
fragment, thus allowing this beautiful piece to enter the pianists'
repertoire. Hayk Arsenyan
