German violinist Johann Schop (1590 – 1667) wrote divisions over the Lachrimae Pavan made famous by English composer John Dowland in his lute song “Flow My Tears.” Virtuoso musicians would play divisions or improvisations on popular tunes in a manner similar to jazz musicians of today.
