Scherzi Pastorali, for bass clarinet and piano, was composed in 1956 by Jan Novák. He was inspired to write for the unusual instrument pairing after hearing the Czechoslovak bass clarinetist Josef Horák. This work is reflective of Novák’s basic optimistic nature, characterized by his musical wit and playfulness as well as his use of folk melodies. Horák was drawn to the style of composing that brought out the best qualities of the bass clarinet, and Novák’s intuitive use of the instrument allowed bass clarinet soloist to make the most of the tone colors available. The piece has never been published and exists only in manuscript form. Notes by Melissa Sunshine Simmons
