Clarinet Sonata in F minor, Op. 109 was written for the British clarinetist Pauline Juler by York Bowen, an English composer and pianist. His talent was recognized early in his career, winning the Erad Scholarship to the Royal Academy in 1898. There he became a student of the famous pedagogue Tobias Matthay, whose other students included Myra Hess, Moura Lympany, and Eileen Joyce. His only clarinet sonata (he wrote another engaging work for bass clarinet and string quartet), was published in 1943 and was premiered that year with Bowen on piano. The three movements are quite romantic in nature, but contain no “slow” movement as is typical in most sonatas. Notes by Stephen Hough and R. Matthew-Walker
