The Fantasy in C major for violin and piano was written in the last year of the composer's life and the year of Beethoven’s death. In the 1830s many composers were writing pieces that were structurally loose, free fantasies which were intended to be virtuoso showpieces. They were usually using operatic themes and the like. The Fantasiewas written for a Czech violinist, Josef Slavik, whom Fryderyk Chopin regarded as the 'second Paganini'.
The Fantasy is in seven sections, the third one being a theme and a set of variations on Schubert’s own song, ‘Sei mir gegrusst’. The melody of the song is both sensuous and striking. The singer sings to a distant lover whom he would love to greet and kiss: ‘Let me greet you, let me kiss you.’ Notes by Magdalena Filipczak
