Much of Schumann’s music can be seen as a reflection of the split nature of his personality - that is, the extraverted and passionate Florestan side, and the introspective and pensive Eusebius side. One can sense this dichotomy in his Fünf Stücke im Volkston for cello and piano, written in 1849, a particularly prolific year of Schumann’s compositional life that also produced such works as the Fantasiestücke for clarinet and piano, the Adagio and Allegro for horn and piano and many choral works. In line with the title, the five miniatures are works of high art flavored with the best sense of folk music. This is immediately evident in the first piece with its folk-like rhythms and its hint of dark humor. The remaining four pieces are full of beautiful song, dark lyricism and strong, rhythmic energy.
