Long after Schubert’s death, a fragment of the first movement of an F-sharp minor sonata was found and catalogued as D.571. The piece was never completed. It is believed to have been composed in July of 1817, and this fragment was published in 1888. The expressive and exquisitely beautiful main subject is based on a repeating tone, a clear trademark element found in many of Schubert's compositions. The tender and somewhat nostalgic atmosphere of the beginning is kept undisturbed almost throughout the whole work, while the shifts between major and minor keys are constant and unexpected. Today's program will introduce this work as it was reconstructed by Martino Tirimo and published as the Wiener Urtext Edition, which is today's most celebrated edition of the Schubert complete piano sonatas.
