Like the Hüe, Swiss composer Frank Martin’s Ballade is also a competition piece, commissioned by the Geneva Competition. Martin wrote a series of five one-movement ballades for solo instrument with piano or orchestra that includes his 1939 Ballade for Flute and Piano. Taking inspiration from a traditional ballad, a narrative set to music, Martin’s Ballade uses the flute to narrate an epic story through dramatic twists and turns.Like the Hüe, the Martin showcases many facets of the flute, utilizing different colors and techniques throughout this 11-section through-composed piece.Emi Ferguson
