Just a few months after he wrote Die schöne Müllerin, Schubert wrote his only piece for flute and piano, an extensive theme and variations on the tune from Trockne Blumen. It was written for a friend, and flute player, who commissioned the piece after having heard the song cycle. A tour de force, each variation bounces back and forth between e minor and e major, highlighting the conflicting emotions of the young miller over the seven variations that showcase the virtuosity of both the flute and the piano. Written four years before Schubert died, the piece was not published until 1850.Emi Ferguson
