The inspiration behind the "Circle of Waltzes" project was to demonstrate the historical richness of the waltz genre by presenting a wide variety of works composed through various different time periods. It is very interesting to observe the different perspectives and distinctive approaches of each composer of the program.
James Carlson was born in Lewiston, Idaho and worked as a professor of mathematics for many years. Waltz (written in 2017) is a melancholic evocation of loss and the passage of time. It was inspired by the memory of the last visit between his father and his young son. Both hoped for years more, but were granted only days.
