The inspiration behind the "Circle of Waltzes" project was to demonstrate the historical richness of the waltz genre by presenting a wide variety of works composed through various different time periods. It is very interesting to observe the different perspectives and distinctive approaches of each composer of the program.
Vladimir Rebikov - Waltz from the fairy tale opera The Christmas Tree, was written in 1901. He was the first Russian composer to make an important use of the seventh and ninth chords and of polytonality. Grieg admired him considerably but his brave and new harmonic palette was not appreciated in Russia.
